Artists Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano and Ilyana Martínez formed an artist collective in 2004 meeting weekly to collaborate on works that incorporate drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and site–specific installations. As individual artists and as members of Z’otz* Collective their work embody themes of migration, displacement, transition and transformation. Their aesthetic language captures a collective imaginary that helps us grasp the multi-layered unpredictable complexities of contemporary life.
Both subtly and overtly, the artists in this exhibition reclaim an unstable perception of belonging and are able to communicate how the body and soul are fractured, can never return to be the same, once displaced. Framed layers of meaning indicate a revelation of experiential truth, a memory of place and of a people translated spontaneously by a subconscious that does not cease to impact. Physical transformation unites these artists as they wander individually and collectively, lingering on themes indicative of their journeys of cultural, emotional and spatial migration.
